iBerkshires reports that the Emergency Department at North Adams Regional Hostpital (NARH) will be named in honor of Dr. E. Wayne Wilkins, Jr. ’41.

Dr. Wilkins has been a resident of Williamstown since his retirement about 20 years ago. He graduated from Williams College and went on to a very successful career in medicine, serving as chief of Emergency Services at Massachusetts General Hospital.

He was a key player in the creation of the New England Life Flight helicopter service and now serves the local health care system in several ways.

For those not in the medical world, to be head of Emergency Services at MGH (often mocked/complimented as [M]an’s [G]reatest [H]ospital) is to have reached the pinnacle of one’s profession, even more so 30 years ago.

There are a lot of Wilkins listed in the alumni directory, some of whom I think are related to the honoree.
