Those are three words that I haven’t had occasion to string together in the past, but this letter to the Record justifies it.

We, as the officers of the Amherst College Rugby Football Club, would like to make a public apology on behalf of our members for events that occurred during the course of our last match against Williams in the spring of 2004. It came to our attention that members of the crowd directed racial slurs at members of the Williams rugby team during our match in Amherst last spring.

Not to dwell on unhappy events, but what happened here, precisely? The letter-writers, while striking a good, constructive tone throughout, provide no further details. Those, like me, who think that complainst about racism at places like Williams and Amherst are mostly overblown have an obligation to understand incidents that contradict our world view. Does anyone know the story?
