Herb Allen ’62 got a brief mention in The New York Times last week.

His work as an investment banker is well known — his boutique firm holds a high-profile conference for media moguls every summer in Sun Valley, Idaho — but Herbert A. Allen’s philanthropy is all low-key.

Mr. Allen, the chief executive of Allen & Company, is the lead donor to the ’62 Center for Theater and Dance, a new performing arts complex at his alma mater, Williams College, in Williamstown, Mass.

But while he donated $20 million of the center’s $50 million cost, he said he wanted it to be named for his graduating class, not for himself. “I didn’t particularly want to see my name on it,” he said last week. “The most enjoyable thing you have in college is your classmates, so that made sense.”

Mr. Allen — who has homes in Williamstown, Sun Valley and Cody, Wyo., as well as New York City — is also helping to finance a show featuring Broadway stars that will be held at the center on Oct. 10, one of a series of performances that start next week to celebrate the center’s opening.

Despite being a multimedia powerhouse, EphBlog has yet to receive an invite to the famous Sun Valley shindig. Since family members come for free, this would do wonders for my efforts to justify/rationalize blog time to my lovely wife. Maybe next year . . .
