Just for the record, Williams offered to

let local students who were enrolled in any college or university that has halted operations because of Hurricane Katrina to take classes at Williams this fall.

Those students would live at home and commute to classes and pay to their home institution whatever amount they were expected to for the semester. Williams will take no payment.

Congratulations to the College on this generosity. I might have recommended that the offer be restricted to students likely to do well academically at Williams, but Schapiro’s decision was a reasonable one. Moreover, he might have known ahead of time that the only students likely to take up such an offer were from Tulane, in which case there was no harm in being overly inviting.

As far as I know, the only local student to accept this offer was Kellen Huban of Tulane.
