Athletics Facilities Planning Update

From Bill Lenhart and Steve Klass, Co-Chairs of the Athletics and
Fitness Facilities Master Planning Committee

To the Williams Community:

We’d like to update you on the status of the Athletics facilities
master planning project.

As we reported earlier this year, we are working on an upgrade to our fitness facilities. Over spring break, the fitness center in Lasell Gym will receive new ventilation and lighting, the floor will be resurfaced, and the walls painted. These steps should significantly enhance the experience of those who use that facility. At the same time, the Committee is working to identify additional space into which we can expand the fitness center while we continue to explore longer-range solutions for meeting the fitness needs of the campus.

Here is the schedule for the fitness facility upgrade project: Beginning on Monday, March 19th, the lower Lasell Entrance will be closed and all facility users will be directed to use the Simon Squash entrance. This will be the case throughout the weeks of March 19th and March 26th. As a reminder, these facilities are typically closed over weekends during spring break. All the equipment in the Lasell multi-purpose room will be moved to the golf cage area on the first floor in Lasell to enable user access to this equipment during spring break. The plan is to have both the Lasell Fitness Center and multi-purpose room open on Monday, April 2nd.

The Weston Field renovation also continues to receive early attention in this process. Our original target date for beginning this project was after the last home football game of the 2007 season. Now, however, it’s become clear that to insure that the College designs the complex that will most effectively meet the needs of students for decades to come, we should take the time afforded by beginning that work a year later, after the last home game of 2008, with the objective of beginning the 2009 football season on the new turf field.

Meanwhile, the overall planning process continues. We will report back to the campus community as plans advance. You can contact either of us if you have questions.
