A False Accusation of Rape

I have been looking for more details on a false accusation of rape and assault that was (allegedly) made by a Williams student several years ago. Back in 2005, Loweeel wrote:

A “fake rape” story actually happened during my sophomore year (IIRC, maybe it was my junior year). This girl STABBED herself in the thigh, and claimed that her off-campus boyfriend came in, raped her, and stabbed her.

Needless to say, the frantic and denunciatory emails flew from Hopkins as fast as a bullet from a mishandled firearm. Needless to say, they were about as accurate as well.

It turns out that (again, IIRC) she wanted attention from him after he broke up with her (and there was nothing about him doing it in any bad ways). Hopkins eventually admitted that it was a false alarm, and the girl withdrew for psychiatric reasons. Despite the fact that campus was turned upside down on this unsubstantiated accusation, there was never going to be any disciplinary proceeding initiated against her.

Can anyone provide more details? I have no interest in reporting this student’s name, but I would like to narrow down the date, link to any Record stories, provide copies of any all-campus e-mails and so on. What do you remember of this event?

Why are we going into this?

The young woman “withdrew for psychiatric reasons” according to Loweeel’s account. No one involved in the episode needs to have it brought up again.

Please let it go.

To the Williams Community:

A female student has reported an aggravated assault in her room by an acquaintance unaffiliated with the College, who resides outside Massachusetts. The student was examined and released by the hospital.

The alleged assailant is described as a 24-year-old white male, 6’2″, 165 lbs., with a shaved head and blue eyes.

As always, please be vigilant about allowing strangers access to our residence halls. Campus security is working with the Williamstown Police Department on this matter. Please report any suspicious activity to the Williamstown Police Department (using 911 or 458-5733) or Campus Security (x4444).

Sincerely,
Nancy Roseman
Dean of the College

To the Williams Community:

The Williamstown Police Department released a statement today on their investigation of the assault originally reported late last week to the College. It said, “The investigation has shown that the alleged assault did not occur, and the entire fact pattern was totally fictitious.”

With this news, I still continue to urge students to remain vigilant in not allowing strangers access to our residence halls and about locking their rooms. Never hesitate to contact the Security Department regarding any suspicious activity.

Sincerely,
Dean Nancy Roseman

I was on campus then, and I have no memory at all of the incident. “frantic and denunciatory emails?” hah.

curiously, I heard about it ad nauseum after the fact from williams misogynists who wanted to tell folks that most rape accusations were fake. curiously also, during the ’01-’02 year, I did have two female friends on campus who were sexually assaulted in some way.
