I can’t tell from ‘Face Book’ …

Many of ephblog’s finest minds applied themselves to the question of ‘Exceptional Kids’ and the make-up of the Williams student body including David Kane. PTC, hwc, rory, larry george, ronit, current eph, and parent ‘12.

The discussions, lists, percentages, charges, counter charges and complete denials went on for eighty- plus comments. Obviously a subject of interest!

And so I turn to this creme of commentary to help me with an answer to my query.

Years ago when I was on campus many dogs were in evidence at classes and athletic events. Many were named ‘Nads’ as in “Go N….”.

Without regard to cats who seem to thrive regardless of educational experience, what percentage of Williams students/customers are canine? And what is that trend?

I recognize that ‘canines’ is non-descriptive of the many ethnic variety catagories of dogs available for statistical measurement: German shephards, Black labs, Chihuahuas, Shiatsus, Old English sheep dogs (probably the bulk of legacies), French poodles (standard through toy and miniature) and, of particular interest today, the Alaskan husky.

Certainly with this august group of numerators and denominators, my questions are readily subject to analysis, but probably need to be multiplied by seven.

I don’t like chihuahuas. I think they should be excluded from campus. They are such smarty-pants, and they have trouble getting along with others.

On the other hand, we need more labs…all colors. They are really smart, fun-loving, sociable, fetch well, swim well…superior in just about every way. Corgis are fine, as well as shepherds and collies.

So, quota-cap on the chihuahuas, please.

In my experience, there is a serious quota on wolves. Most of them have to settle for more “elbows out” places.

Back in the day, there were so many dogs on campus. I especially remember Yo Yo (Soph Mom, there’s a plaque to him in the snack bar; it was saved from Baxter) and Esso, but there were any more. Each house was allowed to have one (but many had lots more). And then The Powers That Be not only enforced the quotas but decided that having a dog allowed its owner to be anti-social or some such claptrap (they clearly did not anticipate all the studies that would lead to dogs being invited to visit nursing homes, nursery schools, and the like, and the love that would be lavished on E. J. Johnson’s and other faculty members’ dogs who were allowed visitation privileges). And then there was an absolute quota imposed: no dogs or any other pets but fish. Such discrimination!

Spoil sports!

And why, I ask you, doesn’t Williams College even have a cow?

So, I must say that it is a bit sobering, to find that as a mere mom on the EB hierarchy, I may be to other bloggers, what ‘chihuahuas’ are to me!

:-P
