Poll on Alumni Giving

See previous discussion of the “EphsChoose” concept, whereby alumni would be able to direct their donations to specific organizations.

If you could direct your donations to Williams student organizations, would you be most likely to…
Give more to orgs, less to the Alumni Fund
Give more to orgs, and about the same to the Alumni Fund
Give more to both student orgs and the Alumni Fund
Give only to student orgs
Continue giving only to the Alumni Fund
Continue to give nothing
Who has money these days, anyway?

I, for one, would donate less to the alumni fund if I were also allowed to donate to student organizations. That said, I would likely donate significantly more to Williams total if I were allowed to donate to student organizations.

I do not donate to the alumni fund. I would donate to student organizations or for certain specific purposes.

I have supported Williams student organizations directly (in rather small $$ amounts) in the past because I had a connection with students from my hometown who were involved in those organizations (and I get a kick out of younger Ephs’ enthusiasms). I wasn’t writing the checks at the same time as my Alumni Fund check (which is neither large nor nearly as large as I wish it could be), and that timing may affect the overall amounts. I know I give more to Williams as a total when I write those additional donation checks. I think of the extra as coming out of the pool of funds that I would otherwise give elsewhere (not to the Williams community). That pool is, for me, for face-to-face donations, to support individuals’ dreams and needs. Everyone’s different, but just giving to an institution doesn’t do it for me in the way the more personal donations do.
Feeling part of a neighbor’s experience of Williams through a more personally-targeted donation also benefits the formal Williams Alumni Fund apparatus because it helps me to feel close to Williams and helps motivate my annual Alumni Fund donation. And I feel that the money adds something special to known individuals’ experiences of Williams, which I hope will in turn engender a deeper love of Williams on their part and open their pockets in support of Williams and Ephs in the future.
But I am very small fish…
