I guess that Alumni Office head Steve Birrell ’64 is retiring.

Williams College invites nominations and applications for the position of Vice President for Alumni Relations and Development.

Reporting to the President, the Vice President is a key member of the leadership team that sets the strategic direction of the College.

Williams seeks a seasoned advancement executive to head an alumni relations and development program to maximize engagement with the College, both personal and financial, by alumni and others. The Vice President will establish the strategic direction and tactical programs to lead the evolution of a highly regarded operation as it adapts to changing social and technological forces. The Vice President will lead a staff of 70 professionals who are responsible for a cohesive advancement program relevant to the College’s increasingly diverse constituencies. Candidates will have ten or more years of experience in the advancement field, including demonstrated success in cultivating and soliciting seven-figure gifts, leading a campaign, and creatively and effectively managing volunteers and engaging alumni and others.

No need for an expensive nationwide search. Just pick someone already at the College. Brooks Foehl, David Dewey, Mike Reed and half a dozen other Williams administrators are all plausible candidates for this position. There are a dozen faculty spouses who would probably work out as well as some stranger.

Doesn’t Williams have a hiring freeze on yet? Williams has more than enough non-faculty employees already. I am not asking (yet) for Morty to fire anyone. But surely we can promote from within, at least for the next few years. There is no good evidence that person X would do better at this job than someone we already know and love like Foehl, Dewey or Reed.
