Until we get a true Eph supergroup (Jesse Winchester, Stephen Sondheim, Fountains of Wayne, Nick Zammuto, fronted by Lee Hom Wang — now that would be interesting) we’ll have to settle for the second least-likely supergroup ever: Tinted Windows, composed of Adam Schlesinger ’89, James Iha of Smashing Pumpkins,  the drummer from Cheap Trick, and Taylor Hanson.  Yes, that Taylor Hanson.   They have an infectious (arguably, annoyingly-so) straight-ahead retro pop sound (and a purposefully — I assume — 80’s-esque cheeseball name to match).   Catch them live on Letterman Tuesday night.  And read more about their formation, including quotes from Schlesinger, here.

Schlesinger may simultaneously be the coolest and most uncool Eph of all time.  Think Lester Bangs.  Yes, he is a sort-of rock star, yes, he has written the scores for, well, scores of movies, and biggest yes of all, he wrote the songs for Stephen Colbert’s Christmas special.  But on other hand, he has also collaborated with BOTH a Hanson AND the Jonas Brothers.  Big, big no.  I don’t know what to think.  Then again, if he succeeds in making Taylor Hanson cool, that may have to be added to the yes column.

Oh, and to all of you who clicked on that Hanson link and now have mmmbop stuck in your head for the rest of the evening, you’re welcome.
