directoryThis week’s exercise in Williams history is to ponder a controversy from two decades ago. I will provide full links and details on Friday. Those who remember the bikini scandal should not tell other readers the answers just yet. Sometime in the 80’s, the Student Telephone Directory featured this picture on the cover. Comments:

1) The Student Telephone Directory was, you guessed it, a listing of all student telephone numbers, all of which were assigned by room. It came out in the fall each year and was distributed to every room (person?) on campus.

2) I apologize for the quality of the photo. In reality, it was a much more detailed shot, blown up to fill the bottom half of the 8.5 by 11 (?) booklet.

3) The women pictured knew, as we said back in the day, how to put on a bathing suit. The photo does not show clearly just how attractive she was. I have the vaguest memory that her Williams sweatshirt ended just above her bikini bottom. Needless to say, the photo was highly popular among male Ephs.

Questions: What do you think the reaction of the Williams community to this photo was 20+ years ago? What do you think that the reaction would be to a similar photo, in an official Williams publication, today?
