Hello—I am the parent of a Williams’ wrestler and have agreed to provide periodic wrestling updates on EphBlog. The coaches and sports information folks do a great job at detailing the results of matches, tournaments, etc. and as such, I will try and limit my postings to information that is largely supplemental. I hope you enjoy it.

Today’s topic is the national and conference polls.

The Brute/Adidas National Wrestling Coaches Association poll is conducted on a bi-weekly basis throughout the season, and is based on the input of six coaches that cover the nine D3 wrestling conferences. In the February 9th edition, Williams jumped from 17th to 11th by virtue of its six victories since the last poll—including a first time win over the then 11th ranked College of New Jersey. The poll can be found at this link: http://www.oswego.edu/athletics/teams/wrestling/coaches_poll.html

On an individual basis, there are two national polls.
1. Brute/Adidas National Wrestling Coaches Association Poll. This national poll publishes the top ten wrestlers in each weight class. Three Ephs’ are ranked in this week’s poll: Ryan Malo is 2nd at 197, Corey Paulish is 5th at 149 and Carl Britenstein is 10th at 157. The poll can be found at the same link as the team poll above.

2. d3wrestle.com poll. This national poll is published by the head coach at Gettysburg College (who started and manages the website that is a fantastic source of information for all things D3 Wrestling). For each weight class he publishes the top ten along with “The Contenders” (guys who are on the brink of breaking into the top ten) and “Honorable Mention”. If a wrestler is in one of these three categories, he is ranked in the top 25 in the nation.

The following Ephs (with their weight class) are ranked in the most recent poll: Josh Mattana, 125, C: Cesare Antista, 133, HM: Dylan Rittenburg, 141, HM: Corey Paulish, 149, 10th: Carl Britenstein, 157, 9th: Nate Shippee, 184, HM: Ryan Malo, 197, 2nd.
The poll can be found at this link: http://www.d3wrestle.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/d3wrestleRankings20100202.pdf

The coaches of the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) publish a weekly team and individual conference poll. In the team poll, Williams has been ranked first from “wire to wire.”

On an individual basis, the conference publishes the top eight by weight class (that includes 14 teams). In the most recent poll, the Ephs’s had a ranked wrestler in every weight class: Dylan Rittenburg (141), Carl Britenstein (157) and Ryan Malo (197) were ranked 1st; Corey Paulish (149) and George Sullivan (174) were ranked 2nd; Cesare Antista (133) was ranked 3rd; Josh Mattana (125) was ranked 4th; Andrew Gatewood (184) was ranked 6th; and Jon Foster (165) and Tom Foote (285) were ranked 7th.

The poll can be found at this link (I could only find it on the Plymouth State website). http://athletics.plymouth.edu/sports/wrest/2009-10/polls/NEWA_Individual_Rankings_-8-Final_2.9.10.pdf
