Don Mahler of the Valley News reports that the College’s [Dartmouth’s] interminable AD search could end very soon. He put up an unofficial short list of candidates:
* The Incumbent: Bob Ceplikas, about whom Dartblog has written previously.
* The Football Star: College Football Hall of Famer Reggie Williams ‘76.
* The Possible: Williams College’s AD Harry Sheehy. Williams has won 13 of the 14 Division III Directors’ Cups. Mahler notes that during 27-year Sheehy’s tenure (17 years as basketball coach; the last 10 as AD), Sports Illustrated selected Williams as the best college for women’s athletes and the nation’s best Division III athletic program.
My vote is for Sheehy. In addition to an outstanding career at Williams, he has done consulting work for other schools, co-written a well regarded book (Raising a Team Player: Teaching Kids Lasting Values on the Field, on the Court and on the Bench), and his bio notes the following: “A noted motivational and inspirational speaker, Sheehy travels the country speaking to alumni, church and business groups.” In short, this is a guy who is at the peak of his career at a Division III school. He is in his mid-50’s and ready for a great new challenge.
I can’t think of a better profile for an important senior position in our administration: successful, thoughtful, experienced, and inspirational. Dartmouth should grab him if it can.
My vote is for Sheehy also, although perhaps for different reasons . . .
When Sheehy is chosen, remember you read about it at EphBlog first!
