Record Approval Survey

From the Record:

Dear Student,

The Williams Record is conducting its biannual approval ratings poll of local and campus institutions and leaders. Please fill out the following poll by Monday May 2nd at 11:59 p.m. The more responses we get, the more accurate the poll results will be.

Please use the following link to participate in the poll.

Thank you,

The Williams Record

1) Copy of the survey here. What advice do you have for the Record reporters behind this effort?

2) The Record ought to make the data behind this, and its other surveys, public. Transparency is good journalistic practice in general, and releasing the data would encourage Ephs of all ages to dive in and look for interesting results.

3) Here is the Record article reporting on the results. Any surprises? The entry system earns more approval than the neighborhoods, but not by nearly as much as I would have expected.

To be inclusive, perhaps there should be a Record survey of the staff, faculty, and alumni. There also seems to be some missing options: divestment, censorship of speakers and murals, replacing school songs (is the Purple Cow offensive, too?). It seems like lots of opinions are just waiting for an outlet (that isn’t called Ephblog!)

RE: The vote sent to alums:

Note sent in with my vote …

These three are terrible (see my vote for notes).

What is needed is not a “The Mountains” stand-in, but a peppy fight song. The three have a false twang to the lyrics and tune, or a hymn recalling trite harmonies.

Bulldog, bulldog Eli Yale; the Bear has made its kill; Fight on Pennsylvania, 10,000 Men of Harvard (Grandson in the class of 2020 with early acceptance)!

Something with a cow!

Brother Ephraim sold his Cow

And bought him a Commission;

And then he went to Canada

To fight for the Nation;

But when Ephraim he came home,

He proved an arrant Coward,

He wouldn’t fight the Frenchmen there

For fear of being devour’d.

The log mural is uncovered now by the way… the students (kids) never wanted it covered.

Is all of this censorship really “about the students” or is it actually about the adults? You have to wonder. A few adults listening to a few students in order to take ownership of important Eph artifacts and ban them.

Right now I know of only two examples… the reverse swastika on Westin was destroyed, and the mural of Williams and Hendrick was covered.

Anyone know of anything else that has been altered or destroyed during this latest “purge”?

They’ll be looking at Haystack next semester. What are they going to do, put a fence around it or something? Censor a religious artifact?

Uh… ok. Have fun with that!

It seems that this “state of censorship” at Williams College is about the administration; which is making all the hoopla about historical representation. It is not the students or alum who are asking for censorship…

That the administration is responsible for this state of censorship is certainly correct. It’s generally those with the most power who are most willing to (mis)use their authority to silence others (for the good of the students or the community). That they’re willing to do so at the smallest suggestion of controversy is what’s really disturbing—what other things have they covered up?
