I Now Delete Comments

This comment has pushed me over the edge.

The investigation gives us clues on how constipated Johnny Drew has been. My suggestions?

1) Dulcolax
2) Miralax

After 16+ years with no (meaningful) comment moderation — other than preventing doxing — I will now be using a different approach, deleting whatever comments I don’t like for whatever reasons I determine, all in an effort of better facilitate conversations among Ephs of goodwill.

Don’t like it? Go elsewhere.

Authors of individual posts have always retained the right to delete comments from their own threads. That will continue. But I will become much more aggressive in deleting garbage any place I find it.

Feel free to point out such garbage if you like, but I will not be refereeing pointless disputes or getting into endless battles about exactly what should or should not be deleted. Indeed, I am highly likely to delete silly arguments along those lines.

Thanks (?) to “Nation” for awakening me from my dogmatic slumber.

Great support for free speech here, David. No irony whatsoever.

So little David will now be deleting comments that are critical or demeaning or disparaging of little him and little his friends, on a platform that is not his intellectual property– a small fact that little he appears to have blithely ignored?

What further actions could Dip-Dud-F*** take, to undermine his total lack of being taken seriously by anyone but his fellow Aspies?

On my posts, I have routinely deleted inappropriate remarks, silly imaginary contributions, and anything involving foul language, swearing and so on.

Personally, I try to write in a family friendly way because I imagine someday my wife or younger relatives (or a random historian) will read what I had to say.

I’m glad to see DDF make this new commitment. It does take more work to weed out those sort of comments. The effort will, however, make Ephblog a much friendlier place for conservative students, faculty and alumni. Thx.

THAT’S the comment that put you over the edge? It isn’t even the hypocrisy about restricting speech. It is that after all of the sludge that has gone through Ephblog, the personal attacks on students, faculty, and alums coming from the very person you seem to be stepping up for, THIS is what gets you exercised enough to restrict speech.

I agree with dcat that this seems like an odd place to lay down the law. But I also think that EphBlog risks turning into the comment sections of bigger on-line publications, so in some ways I believe this is an OK policy. It does run (somewhat) counter to my belief that free speech is a paramount value, and I hope that “censorship” is limited to (unwarranted?) personal attacks, as well as what (to me at least) are obviously hurtful comments (“people of X descent are simply stupid and lazy”). Its clear that there is not always a bright line between obviously hurtful and merely blunt, but I hope that those choices are made in a way that makes sense.

Oh, my.

A public “trigger warning” and confession rolled into one (?).

Agree this is an ironic hill to take a stand on, given some of the bilious dreck that’s gone unchecked.

David, delete your account.

Wow, it’s almost as though it DOES make sense to limit speech in certain circumstances.

P.s., remember, too, that our ace Grievance King is contributing to “history” by posting here.

Was your post ghost written by Adam Falk?

It would appear that for both you and John Drew that some speach if more free than other speach, eh?

I assume that the unmentioned corollary edict is that you have also deleted your any sense of self-awareness regarding hypocrisy.

You will find a welcome home in today’s GOP and conservative movement.

Sir Dudley Sir;

It seems you may be doing some of the “freedom from speech,” sir! I do not know what to think as that is the tool of the socialists but also you and ephblog are always very not-socialist. I will bury my face in the Flag and think on this Long and Hard. Perhaps you should delete only the comments from those who hate the Free Speech! (clever)

Prayers eternal,
A True Patriot (USA USA)
