Below the break are all the current Factrak comments for Professors Love and Green. They seem quite good, especially for Love. But perhaps I don’t have a sense of the average student comment . . .

Professor Love:

Professor Love is so intelligent, approachable, funny, and effective at engaging students in the classroom. She is one of those professors who just genuinely wants her students to do the best they can do in her class and beyond. Definitely take a class with her if you get the chance!

I absolutely loved taking a first year English class with Professor Love. She was amazing at lecturing, promoting class discussion, giving constructive feedback on papers, and making time to meet outside of class. She always shared insightful comments that made me see things in a different way, and she made everyone feel included and everyone’s voices heard.

She is a great professor in class except when she goes on unnecessarily long tangents on her own. A fair grader on her essays, albeit she wants essays to be in her specified format. Unreasonable in absences. I had a job interview and had to skip a class, and she refused to excuse me for the absence even after the Dean’s office contacted her about it. I have not heard of a professor not excusing an absence for a job interview.

I had a great time in this class. As a very STEM oriented person, Professor Love was able to help me develop my writing in ways I would not have been able to in other classes. The readings were long, but rewarding and worth the work. Although it is listed as a writing intensive course, the writing component of the course is very manageable.

She was incredibly accessible outside of the classroom and fantastic at promoting discussion not only through excellent material but with thought-provoking questions each and every day. I still look over essays from her class for tips on writing current essays, as her advice is broadly applicable and insightful. Highly recommend Prof. Love.

Professor Love is a great leader for discussions. Although the topics of discussion were grim (slavery, racism, sexism, etc), she found moments to insert humor and lighten the mood of the course. It was incredibly interesting to learn about different novels related to slavery. Papers are definitely doable.

Professor Love is very passionate about what she teaches and really engages students and encourages new ideas. I really liked how empathic she was, and I also think that allowed her to connect with the readings more. She’s very approachable and also a fair grader. The workload wasn’t too bad.

Loved this class! I could listen to Professor Love’s lectures all day. Class discussions were always so interesting because of her. She brought so much to every class. I would highly recommend you get to know her while she is here. You will not regret it.

Professor Love did a great job of promoting discussion, and was extremely helpful both in and out of class. I highly recommend her as an English professor, particularly for incoming freshman. She was very understanding when it came to deadlines, and was incredibly helpful in talking through paper ideas during office hours.

Professor Love is a not only a genius, but SO kind and accessible. She is wonderful in class, but also so so helpful and understanding in emails and one-on-one meetings. This class was incredibly insightful and engaging—probably my favorite class I have taken at Williams so far!

Professor Love made my first English class at Williams a wonderful experience. She was always willing to meet to bounce of essay ideas, was incredibly understanding, led class with a great sense of humor, and it was clear she deeply cared for all of us in the class.

Prof Love is absolutely wonderful! Would definitely recommend taking any class with her. We had some difficulty generating sustained discussion as a class (through no fault of Prof Love’s) and she came up with some creative and effective strategies to help us warm up to each other.

Professor Love has been a great discussion leader when it comes to this class. The books she has chosen for the class were great and offered a variety of insight into slavery. Although the class is writing intensive, it seems to not be as much writing compared to the other writing intensive classes. She offers a lot of feedback on the essays and allows some class time to do writing workshops. During office hours, she is very open to helping you with your thesis, sub-claims, or evidence and is always there to help answer any confusion encountered during the reading or discussion.

I really liked Professor Love, she was super approachable during office hours. Her course was challenging but interesting. She worked hard to promote discussion in the class, although it could be tough in an 8:30 class with 10 people

GREAT professor. Class discussions were always interesting, occasionally bordering on life-changing. Her interpretations of the concepts she brought to the table felt refreshing, new, and exciting. I always came into class interested in comparing what I noticed to what she noticed. Fairly tough grader with a strict preferential writing style, but gives very very helpful notes that can be used even outside the course. Also, she’s hilarious when she needs to be, which makes some of the very heavy topics discussed in this class so much more easier to process. In general, Prof. Love has done amazing her first year and has made my first year at Williams so much more exciting.

I did not like this course at all. She is a new professor and clearly has very high standards of writing. The first problem that I had with her is that she only likes a particular writing style so if you don’t fit that then you are basically going to get a C. Secondly, she isn’t very approachable and somehow makes you question your writing skills. If you take tis course, be sure to be an english major and very confident in your writing.

Professor Love is great, and Black Literature Matters was one of my favorite classes. All the readings and discussions were super interesting and relevant, and I looked forward to coming to class each day. Even though it was her first semester teaching, I was very impressed and am sure she can only improve. She is very approachable and gives lots of helpful feedback. The workload is not unreasonable- Professor Love understands the student life and assigns limited length reading so students can actually do them. She also brought music into the class- having to listen to Beyonce as a homework assignment was pretty great.

Professor Love is, in short, absolutely wonderful. She does her best to engage students in each and every discussion, and is extremely approachable and flexible with accommodations for students with additional needs. The texts she chose for this class are all so jarring and inspiring, each reading I did made me mad- and worked me up to participate fully in class discussions. In terms of coursework, the assignments are demanding enough that they challenge me to think more, write more, and do better, but if you do find things challenging, Professor Love will always be more than happy to schedule office hours and talk through whatever thoughts and/or challenges you’ve been having. And even among the serious topics explored in the course, Professor Love does not take herself too seriously, and remains open to new ideas, perspectives, even an occasional chuckle.

Professor Love is great . As a new professor, she is still figuring out how to effectively lead discussion. That said, she will emphatically agree, challenge, or push your points in order to develop them further in during discussion. She gives a lot of written feedback that, really helps to improve your writing. Overall, I can only see her getting better in subsequent semesters and would definitely recommend taking a class with her. (Plus, the material is really interesting, and a great introduction to black literature).

I should also mention that it was extremely valuable to have someone like Professor Love leading a classroom. She is a strong black woman from the south and is completely unapologetic about it. Her presence as an authority figure really added to my semester, as I was beginning to feel jaded with the whiteness within academia. Professor Love was a breath of fresh air for this reason, and she made dealing with my other classes a lot better.

Professor Green:

Can be very hard to talk to during class discussions and not very open to listening to others. However, most times he actually listens and wants to help you and gives really great ideas during office hours. I can tell that he is very passionate about what he teaches and wants to help students feel the same passion he feels.

Dr. G is too good for Williams, in my humble opinion. He has a lot of experience with community organizing and he is brilliant at promoting class conversation and working to build a non-heirarchical classroom environment. He also is open to experimentation with a lot of different forms of knowledge and creative expression, and having a class with him opened up new forms for activism and world-building for me. That said, this course was chaotic and unpredictable at times. I think he is still settling into his teaching position. But he is funny, brilliant, provocative, and assigns readings and art pieces that have changed my life.

Dr. G and the course, itself, were very emotionally demanding. However, Dr. G offered new and interesting ways of interacting with the coursework. If you are looking for a class unlike any other class at Williams, Black Queer Looks is for you. This class is not for the students who want to flex their intellegence. Dr. G does not tolerate that. The course is all about self-development.

Dr. G is a great person, but he’s not the best prof. His classes are very unpredicatable and he doesn’t really stick to the syllabus. He also tends to lecture a lot and doesn’t do a great job of promoting discussion amongst students. But he also really cares about students and is very flexible regarding deadlines and assignments. He’s really interested in the personal growth of students and welcomes and encourages creativity.

Dr. G’s classes aren’t for everyone- he’s very much into theory, and for those new to black queer thought and afrofuturism, as I was, the course seemed overwhelming at the outset. But as the course went on, I discovered so much about myself, and was challenged by ideas I’d never seen before. Freedom Dreams is a class that gives as much to you as you’re willing to give to it. If you’re not interested in theory, it can be a tough pill to swallow, but if you have even a passing interest in Afrofuturism and theories of blackness, I’d recommend it.

Professor Green definitely knows his stuff but is often disorganized in lecture. However, women’s gender studies is a class that is often hard to structure because it’s very discussion based. If you want more concrete structure, seek him outside of class.

Dr. G is a phenomenal professor and takes unique and creative approaches to teaching. In Black Queer Looks we did a lot of creative writing and read a wide variety of materials, which made the class incredibly interesting and important. They are such an incredible person to have at Williams and no one should miss the opportunity to learn from them. Dr. G challenged us to think and write in new and different ways, which I find to be rare at Williams.

Dr. G pushed me to think in ways I didn’t know possible – beyond boundaries and structure. The required readings, movie screenings, and performances wove together as a part of this landscape. While physical assignments to turn in are few, I would not want to miss any of the material to read.

Dr G challenged me to approach theory in such a way that I was forced to grapple with myself and the concept of hope. His class was really amazing in so many ways- in the ways it pushed my thinking, my ways of thinking, and what I think about. One of my favorite classes and favorite profs so far.

I absolutely loved Professor Green. His classroom style can admittedly be an acquired taste; he expects strong participation, and can really push students in class for this. If this style makes you uncomfortable, I would not recommend him. If not, then I say take a class with him as soon as possible. He is clear on essay prompts, selects really interesting readings in class, and encourages really good discussion in seminars.

What I don’t like about Professor Green is that he cold calls EVERYONE ALWAYS. No one is safe, so if you don’t like that, you should take the class with a different professor. He also tries to take a creative approach to teaching, which I appreciate, but it can feel unnecessary to write haikus and share them out in the beginning of every class. It’s WGSS 101, not creative writing! Personally, not my favorite teaching approach.

Dr. G is a really cool dude, and made discussions really fun and relevant. Each class, at least for this course, started off with a freewrite about a prompt he would give us. It was informal, but a lot of the material you or your peers come up with is actually really darn cool. Would highly recommend.

Dr. Kai M. Green is the best lecturer I’ve had so far. He’s equally amazing at promoting discussion. His class has changed my world prospective. He is also one of the most caring professors on campus. After hearing how the readings were taking an emotional toll on me (the readings made me confront a lot of the past experiences I’ve had growing up as a hispanohablante, queer immigrant) he dedicated a class to working on effective strategies for coping with difficult emotions. He is great with relating theory to practice.
