“Why Aren’t You Listening?” — Full Livestream Reupload

For anyone who cares about the past, present, and future of Williams College, this video is a vital historical document of campus life in 2019. College Council’s decision to remove it from their Facebook page was, I assume, an unfortunate concession to student activist demands that all this stuff be kept under the table. I’m a current student who luckily saved a copy of the livestream from that meeting just before they took it down this weekend.

Interesting.

Several articles in the Record give credence to the speakers claims. True or not?

This is what free speech can look like. He has that right. I’d have left out the profanity, but you are adults.

You can disagree with the method, language used, and even the truth of the message, but not the forum. CC meetings are an open forum- unless you close it? He has the right, and he gave the audience a chance to respond.

All good.

Not sure if college council meetings are truly open fora—maybe semi-open with some important conditions, most importantly adherence to a defined speaking order (and council often votes to limit speaking time), and speaking out of turn is not permitted. What these activists did was completely stop this forum at their own unilateral discretion, prevent any other substantial dialogue or action from taking place, and berate its participants for nearly twenty minutes while demanding their rapt attention. It’s worth bearing in mind that the schedule for these meetings is zero sum; the rant in the video prevented a number of other groups to be heard and other topics discussed.

But I digress, I’m much more concerned about the content of their demands, which were explained in detail at the subsequent week’s meeting. To summarize, MinCo wants $225k, the equivalent of CC’s entire semester budget, transferred to their account immediately for them to spend as they see fit (with no restrictions because they “don’t gave any bylaws”), and they seem willing to individually shame anyone on the council who doesn’t acquiesce (à la Tristan Whalen). All to avoid the trauma and injustice of being asked extremely mild and fair questions by the majority white students of College Council during funding requests. And the way things are going, I wouldn’t be surprised if they get it.

On behalf of other concerned students, thank you for archiving this piece of history.

Thanks Serviam! Also, great comment that sums things up nicely. It’d be fun to go step-by-step through the CARE Now demands/requests to Maud–certainly some good things in there I support, but also some more…radical…requests, all of which would generate interesting discussion.
