Commencement is this morning. Congratulations to all our graduating seniors!

I know that there is a livestream, but I can’t find it. Could someone please point it out?

Today was the first time in about 50 years that a member of a certain protected class of persons graduated from Williams.

Can you name the class?

A veteran, I presume.

But I don’t think that’s correct. Any Eph who went to a military summer program, even if they did not accept a commission upon graduation is, legally, a veteran.

DDF-

Uh, no. Not true. Under title 38 you have to be discharged. You are not a veteran until you have military service- DD214.

Nor are you a member of the military while preparing for OCS, or in ROTC. So, no. What you have just described is a person who does not have one day of military service.

This is not just semantics either.

Technically, military academy students are in the service with the rank of “cadet.” They are subject to the UCMJ. ROTC and others are not. Although I doubt a cadet would ever claim status. They would be admonished if they did.

VFW standards are even stricter. So are many state laws and regulations. You need a campaign ribbon- you have to have served in a war in the war zone- to join the VFW.
